best pho in Ho Chi Minh - feature

Pho – what is it good for? Whoa whoa whoa. You may or may not be aware of Vietnam’s delicious national dish Pho (pronounced fur with a dropping then rising tone, imagine Scooby doo saying fur) but for the purposes of this piece I’ll presume you are.  What is it and where can you find the best Pho in Ho Chi Minh. You definitely should not miss these places in your Saigon food tour.

What does the best pho in Ho Chi Minh offer?

It’s believed the name of the dish comes from the French ‘pot au feu’ (literally pot on the fire) although there is a contrasting school of thought that says the name came from Chinese immigrants to Vietnam in the early 20th century. Enough with the history you want to know about the best pho in Ho Chi Minh, then read on.

In essence Pho is flat rice noodles in beef stock, thinly sliced beef cooked to your liking, served with a variety of garnishes.  The style of Saigon food tour usually has beansprouts and thai basil mix in the broth along with lime, hoisin sauce and chilli in oil to be added according to your taste.  Sometimes Pho is served as Pho Ga (i.e. chicken) but we won’t bother with that nonsense here. The best pho in Ho Chi Minh is always beef pho

Nice spots for the best pho in Ho Chi Minh

  1. Pho Le – Vo Van Tan street, District 3

This is the best pho in Ho Chi Minh in this author’s eyes.  The broth is always steaming hot, there is ample amounts of beef and a choice of large or small dishes.  A standard dish is 55,000 vnd. Though the price maybe quite high, I highly recommend this shop for your Saigon food tour.

  1. Pho Hoa – Pasteur street, District 1

Pho Hoa is a family owned business and may people choice as the best pho in Ho Chi Minh. They serve the pho here with a type of fried bread called quẩy (pronounced quoy). The restaurant has air-conditioning and a bowl will cost around 50,000 vnd.

  1. Pho Phu Vuong – Le Van Sy street, District 3

A large restaurant out in District 3, this is plastic chairs and metal table kind of place but that’s the type of place you will often find the best pho in Ho Chi Minh. There are elements of Northern and Southern style here.  50,000 vnd per bowl.

  1. Pho 24 – Various locations

Cheating a bit here as this isn’t really the best pho in Ho Chi Minh – but its good and reasonably priced and most importantly if you don’t want to go looking for a place then these restaurants are all around to drop by on your Saigon food tour.
